( in all honesty, tomo hadn't meant to obtain a traveling companion. true, he had had a few wandering swordsmen and merchants tag along for brief stints of his adventures in the past, but no one had stayed more than a week or two. traveling in numbers was a matter of convenience and safety, after all, and permanent arrangements went against the spirit of it all. yet, despite all of this never having been part of the plan, tomo can't say he dislikes it.

kazuha is, well, an enigma. the flowery poetry, the effortless glide of his sword when they're fighting thieves or monsters, and the peculiar way he seems to be more in touch with nature than humans. at first, tomo had just labeled him a "weird guy" and that was that. nowadays, he finds comfort in those quirks, realizing each and every are an important facet of his traveling companion.

and how long has it been, exactly? months, certainly. perhaps they're bordering on a year. there was never a spoken agreement that they would travel together, but there was also never a discussion of them going separate ways, either. it simply was an acknowledgement of moving forward.

all of that was likely exacerbated when tomo acquired one fuzzy ball of sunshine. there was no way tomo could disrupt her sense of stability by having one of her fathers leave suddenly. separation would be oh so stressful on the poor feline. or, that's the bulletproof argument tomo theorized he would say if kazuha ever said he'd be going left when tomo made the first steps down the right path.

today, though, that's neither here nor there. today, tomo is sunbathing by the riverside, feline curled up against his side. they'll need to barter a ride on a small ship to cross to the next island, but that's for later. much later. for now, tomo is taking a page out of kazuha's book and enjoying listening to the wind, the bubbling of the creek, the purring of their fearless feline. nature speaks, tomo understands, but maybe he's just now beginning to listen. he'll never admit that it's because of kazuha; not to his face, anyway.

that is, until said feline begins to batt at the loose end of tomo's scarf. )

Hey, now. We've been through this... ( the murmur is groggy, true evidence of a midday catnap. )
